While at Tennessee Wesleyan, Hugh was a member of the Men's Basketball team from 1961 to 1964. Also he was Vice President of the Freshmen Class, Student Government Representative his senior year and was a part of the Sigma Phi Eplison Fraternity. In 1965, Hugh was elected Mr. Tennessee Wesleyan College.
Hugh graduated in 1965 from Tennessee Wesleyan. After Graduation he had a very successful coaching career. He coached both Calhoon High School and Cleveland State Community College. Hugh Coached Calhoon High School Women's Basketball Team from 1966 to 1974 with his record being 175-56. He took Calhoon to its first ever State Tournament in 1971 with a 33-3 record. He was also the assistant coach for the boy's basketball, baseball, and golf teams. Hugh caoched the Woman's Basketball Team at Cleveland State from 1974 to 1984. In those ten years the team had a combined record of 205-60. This was Cleveland State's first women's basketball team. The Lady Cougars were NJCAA Regional Champions in 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1978. They also has National Tournament apperances finishing 7th in the Nation in 1974-75 and 4th in the Nation 1975-76. Hugh was named Coach of the Year by Tennessee Junior College's in 1976 and again by the National Junior College Athletic Association in 1978. Upon his retirement in 1984, Hugh was ranked as the 6th winningest women's basketball coach in NJCAA history. Along with basketball, Hugh also coached softball. From 1981 to 1984, the Cleveland State softball team was also very successful. They finished as NJCAA Regional Champs in 1983 and finished 5thint he National Tournament. In 1984, they finished 3rd in the National Tournament. Walker was also named to the TJCAA Hall of Fame along with the TWC Hall of Fame in 2011.
The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to identify and honor in a permanent manner those individuals who have achieved excellence in athletics at Tennessee Wesleyan College and others who have contributed to the advancement of Tennessee Wesleyan athletics by their support of time, resources, or both.
The award is divided into three categories:
Outstanding Athlete: Those who have achieved excellence in athletics at Tennessee Wesleyan College and are 15 years removed from his/her playing date.
Outstanding Coach: Those who have advanced and enhanced the concept of athletics at Tennessee Wesleyan College through their talents as coaches in their respective communities.
Outstanding Contributor: Those who have contributed to the advancement of Tennessee Wesleyan College athletics and who are classified as non-athletes or coaches, and who may or may not have matriculated at Tennessee Wesleyan College.
There is also an award for Teams of Honor- This award is intended to recognize teams who excelled athletically through their outstanding team record or post season achievement. Team honorees will not be inducted in the Hall of Fame but will be recognized at the annual awards banquet. Any current or former Tennessee Wesleyan Coach, former team member, or alumnus is eligible to nominate a team for this recognition. Only one team will be honored per year. Nominations for this honor should include the name and year of the team and a list of known accomplishments.
