Luke Winter looks to score
TWC beats second nationally ranked team in three days
Men's Soccer - Mon, Sep. 26, 2011
After beating #19 Bryan College on Wednesday, TWC had a quick turn around to play on Saturday against the University of the Cumberlands who have been receiving votes nationally. Even after the win against Bryan, TWC wanted to prove that it wasn't just a one off result.
Although TWC had some tired legs they seemed to be up for the game and started well. They were putting a very good University of the Cumberlands team under pressure. TWC won a number of set pieces in dangerous areas and finally broke the deadlock after seven minutes of the game. Luke Winter won a corner on their left, John Carrier whipped the ball towards the near post where Pedro Alba was able to flick it on. His flick went high towards the back post, Luke Winter was quickest to react and bravely headed the ball into the back of the net. TWC continued to press and almost had a second when a Josh Simnett free kick was headed over by Alba.
The University of the Cumberlands came into the game and began to show their quality. Their two Brazilian attacking midfielders Thiago Andrade and Pedro Costa were getting on the ball more and showing their quality. It was Andrade who equalized for the Cumberlands with an excellent goal, he beat two TWC players and rifled a left footed strike into the side netting of the TWC goal. This made the half time score TWC 1 the University of the Cumberlands 1.
TWC came out of the locker room with the bit between their teeth and started to pressure the Cumberlands players all over the field. They stopped Cumberlands creative players from having time on the ball and this pressure helped create TWC's second goal. Richard Zuzart won the ball inside Cumberlands half and played a fantastic through ball to the onrushing Luke Winter who managed to nip in right before the Cumberlands goal keeper, lift it over him and into the back of the net. TWC 2 Cumberlands 1.
TWC continued to create and won a corner from the right, John Carrier lifted it in, Billy Sparks rose highest and right before he headed the ball into the back of the net one of the Cumberlands defender raised his arm and knocked it out of Sparks path. The referee had no choice than to award TWC a penalty. Luke Winter grabbed the ball and placed it on the spot looking to complete his hat trick. He looked confident as he ran up to take the kick, sent the goal keeper the wrong way and slammed the ball into the corner of the net.
TWC sat back a little on their lead and Cumberlands came at them. TWC looked strong at the back and didn't look like conceding, until one of the Cumberlands players mishit a shot right into the path of Andrade who was alone inside the penalty area and slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net. This made the score 3-2 to TWC with ten minutes left. TWC sorted a few things out and made a couple of changes to deal with the Cumberlands final onslaught which they did with relative ease and they almost put the game away on the counter. Winter beat his man and slid the ball across the box to Garrett Koon who took a touch and struck the ball towards the Cumberlands goal, their keeper made a good save and TWC saw out the rest of the game. The final score was TWC 3 the University of the Cumberlands 2.
TWC's next game is against Georgetown College at 3pm on Tuesday in Georgetown, KY.
