Tennessee Wesleyan College men's soccer team traveled up the Appalachian Mountains to Montreat, NC on Saturday to play conference rivals Montreat College. With the unseasonably cold weather, high winds, high elevation, and the temperature at Montreat very low, it made the playing conditions for both teams difficult.
With TWC coming off the back of four straight wins confidence was high going into the game, but Montreat had started the season well and had some good results against tough opposition, so the TWC team knew it was going to be a tough game.
Montreat started the game well and almost caught TWC of guard in the first couple of minutes, Montreat's in form striker Maximiliano Viera found himself alone inside the TWC penalty area, he tried to slide the ball into the corner of the net, but TWC's goalkeeper Josh Leader saved it excellently with his foot. TWC began to come into the game and were keeping the ball very well. TWC had a big opportunity to take the lead right before half time, Garrett Koon did well down the TWC right, he delivered a great ball into the Montreat area where Daniel Cardona slid in at the back post and put the ball into the net. TWC celebrated, but the assistant referee had raised his flag and the goal was taken away. The teams went in at halftime 0-0.
The second half started with TWC on top, Luke Winter and John Carrier were getting on the ball more and putting the Montreat defense under pressure. It was through Carrier that TWC took the lead. After fifty minutes of the game Luke Winter picked the ball up, turned and played the ball through to Carrier who was charging at the Montreat defense. He still had work to do, he turned a couple of defenders inside out and lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper and into the corner of the net. TWC 1 Montreat 0.
Montreat hit back two minutes later, through the dangerous Maximiliano Viera. He cut in from the left and curled a cross towards the back post, nobody got a touch on it and it ended up hitting the back post and crossing the line, this made the score TWC 1 Montreat 1.
TWC continued to press and were looking dangerous. They scored again after seventy five minutes when Carrier slid the ball to Luke Winter who ran with the ball past his marker and in a mirror image of TWC's first goal he lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper and into the corner of the net. Montreat upped the pressure in the last fifteen minutes in search of the elusive equalizer, but through some dogged defending from the TWC team the equalizer didn't come. The final score was TWC 2 Montreat 1.
TWC's next game is another Appalachian Athletic Conference game and is at home against Reinhardt University on Wednesday at 4pm. Reinhardt is currently ranked #24 in the nation.
