Yesterday the Tennessee Wesleyan College men's soccer team played a home game against another Appalachian Athletic Conference rival in Bluefield College. Bluefield are having an up and down season to this point, having won seven, lost six and drew one. TWC are in form winning their last seven games and scoring twenty one goals in the process. The game was going to be a tough one for both teams, with torrential rain just before kick off, the playing surface was slick and puddles were scattered all over the field.
With it being TWC's last regular season home game, it was their senior day and at half time TWC's seniors Grant Beeler, Momodou Barrow, Miguel Valadez, Hector Jaramillo, Eric Jones, Matt Rice, Richard Zuzart and TD Schlafer were recognized for their contribution to TWC men's soccer.
The game started well for TWC, they were dominating possession and looking dangerous going forward. TWC opened the scoring in the eighth minute through the in form Luke Winter who overpowered the Bluefield center backs and slammed a half volley past the stationary goalkeeper who could do nothing but watch the ball whistle past and into the top corner of his net.
TWC extended their lead after twenty minutes, John Carrier picked up the ball on the left wing and drifted past two Bluefield defenders, he squared the ball to Pedro Alba who from twenty five yards struck a powerful shot towards the Bluefield net, the goal keeper made a mess of the save and the ball squirmed past him and into the corner of the goal. 2-0 TWC.
TWC made it 3-0 before the break when John Carrier again beat his defender and split the Bluefield wide open with his through ball to the onrushing Daniel Cardona who was cutting in from the left wing. Cardona still had a lot of work to do and calmly passed the ball into the far corner of the goal. It was Cardona's first goal in a TWC shirt. TWC went into the half with a 3-0 lead.
After the half time senior presentations TWC came out and again showed their class, keeping the ball for long periods and make the Bluefield players chase shadows. TWC scored again when Garrett Koon pressured the Bluefield left back, Koon took the ball from him, played it to Carrier and he in turn found the onrushing Josh Simnett, who was bursting into the attack from his right back position. Simnett took a touch and unleashed a fierce right footed drive, the Bluefield keeper could only parry the ball back to Simnett who slammed the rebound into the roof of the net.
TWC were coasting and they closed out the scorning three minutes from time when Jose Arturo Lezema crossed from the right to Winter who deftly placed his shot across the keeper and into the far corner of the Bluefield goal. This made the final score TWC 5 Bluefield 0.
TWC's next game is away at Campbellsville University on Thursday at 6pm.
