The Tennessee Wesleyan College men's soccer swept into the Appalachian Athletic Conference semi finals with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Virginia Intermont College on Saturday. On paper the game had the potential to be a tricky tie, with VI having a number of star players back from injury.
As the game started TWC was being put under by the hard working VI side. TWC was trying to possess the ball, but struggling early in the game because of the work rate and pressure VI were trying to impose. TWC began to settle and took the lead in the tenth minute, when Josh Simnett played a long ball into the VI box, there was confusion in the defense and the ball fell to Pedro Alba who controlled the ball and slid it across the six yard box to the prolific Luke Winter who had the simple task of slotting the ball into the net.
TWC was dominating possession and creating chance after chance, but nothing was hitting the back of the net. Then in the forty third minute the ball was picked up just outside the TWC penalty area by Hector Jaramillo, he turned and played the ball to John Carrier who started a mazy run down the left wing, he left two defenders for dead as he continued into the VI box and nonchalantly lifted the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net. This was the last action before the half and the teams went into the break TWC 2 VI 0.
TWC started the second half the same way they ended the first, on the front foot. They were dominating possession and looking threatening going forward. TWC extended their lead after sixty four minutes when some good interplay saw Pedro Alba slide Garrett Koon in on the VI goalkeeper, the keeper made a good save but it rebounded into the path of Koon, who headed the ball into the empty net.
TWC scored again with fifteen minutes left in the game when Jose Arturo Lezema played the ball to John Carrier who was cutting in from the left wing. He had a fantastic first touch that took him past the VI right back and through on the goalkeeper, as he closed in on goal he took his opportunity and slid the ball under the keeper and into the corner of the net.
Carrier capped of the scoring and sealed his hat trick two minutes later, again TWC had some good interplay on the right wing, Hector Jaramillo played a beautiful cross into the path of Carrier who powered the ball past the keeper with his left foot.
The final score of the game was TWC 5 VI 0. TWC travel to Johnson City, TN for the semi final of the Appalachian Athletic Conference where they will play #6 seed Montreat College who upset #3 seed Reinhardt University 1-0 in their quarter final game.
