Athens, TN - Scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Bulldogs a home opener victory over Shorter University. The Bulldogs were down 4-3 after five innings of play but redeemed themselves to secure the win 8-5 at Jack Bowling Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs had 12 hits with Stephen Branca leading the Bulldog offense with three hits, scoring two runs and an RBI. Thomas Sicking scored two runs and also had two hits. Dale Ricketts also added two hits. Anthony Boix, Jake Stone, Taylor Oldham, Jordan Guida (DH), and Tanner Quirk added to the Bulldog offense with one hit each.
Corey Collins was the winning pitcher relieving starting pitcher Jeremy Fitzgerald after six innings. Fitzgerald faced 22 batters, allowed seven hits and five runs. Collins pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief retiring the seven batters he faced. Alfonso Yevoli earned his first save striking out two for the final two outs.
The Bulldogs host West Virginia Institute of Technology on Saturday in a double header beginning at 12:00. The rubber match of the series will be Sunday with the first pitch at 2:00.
