Although the Bulldogs had a 9 point lead at half and finished the game defeating Union, 66-59, it was a hard fought battle the whole game with Union trying to upset the number one team in the first game of the AAC Tournament. Tennessee Wesleyan moves on to play against Virginia Intermont who defeated Bryan College. Also, playing in the semi-final round on Thursday is Reinhardt who won over Milligan and Bluefield, who beat Montreat.
The Bulldogs won the jump ball and started the game with a 2 pointer by Quincy Scates, but Union was not laying down that easily. They came back to score the next five points to let the Bulldogs know they were there to play. Tennessee Wesleyan worked throughout the half to gain those points back and extend the lead to as much as 12 with 4:25 left.
Union College came out of the locker room at half ready to play going on a 20-9 run to tie the game and then take a 2 point lead. With back and forth scoring, it wasn't until there were only two minutes left in the game that the Bulldogs were able to take the lead for good. Desmond Crisp hit a field goal to go up 58-57, followed by a series of free throws by Shannon Smith, Desmond Crisp, and E'Jay Ward gave the Bulldogs the win at 66-59.
Desmond Crisp netted 20 points for the Bulldogs. Also in double digits was Shannon Smith with 11 and E'Jay Ward with 10 points. Ward also had 8 assists and four steals. Quincy Scates had 8 points and pulled down 7 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
The Semi-final game against Virginia Intermont will begin at 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 23rd.
