The Lady Bulldogs breezed through the opening round of the AAC Tournament defeating the Fighting Koalas of Columbia College, 86-63. Tennessee Wesleyan moves onto the semifinal round of the AAC Tournament which is to be played Friday night at 7:00 pm in Athens. With number 4 Virginia Intermont defeating number 5 Montreat, it leaves the Lady Bulldogs pitted against the Lady Cobras of VI. Also playing in the semi-final round is Union College, who defeated Reinhardt College and Milligan, who upset Bluefield College, last night.
Candace Cain opened up the game with eight of Wesleyan's first nine points, while Cody Houck and Michelle Davis hit 3-point baskets, but the Lady Bulldogs held only a slim, 19-17, lead midway of the first half. Heather Gibson started a 16-1 run with two free throws and netted half that total with eight points. Cody Houck added four points, Rochelle Davidson and Candace Cain two each to put TWC up, 35-18. Cain closed the half with a driving layup, allowing Wesleyan to open an 18-point gap, 42-24. Cain had 14 points in the first 20 minutes.
Gibson and Houck combined to score 14 points after halftime to extend the Lady Bulldogs lead. Gibson had two 3-pointers, along with a 12-foot jumper, and Houck a trey to go with a three-point play and the gap was 25, 56-31, with 16:38 to play. Wesleyan held its biggest lead at 71-43 at the 9:30 mark.
Houck finished with 19 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots. Cain had 18 points, six rebounds; Gibson 16 points, six rebounds and Michelle Davis 13 points, seven rebounds. Leah Frazier added six points, along with seven assists and a team-high 10 rebounds.
