The Bulldogs traveled to Montreat College this past weekend and although they lost the first game of the series, they were able to clinch the Regular Season title by winning the final two games. The Bulldogs go into the final weekend of conference play at 19-2, 5 games ahead of Bryan and Union.
Josh Cullers limited Montreat to one unearned run through the first six innings of the first game, but ran into trouble in the seventh when there was miscommunication on a flyball and an error on a doubleplay grounder which aided the Cavalier cause and gave them the 4-3 win.
Jake Stone and Drew Levi both had doubles with an RBI that helped TWC lead, 3-1. Reliever All Yevoli got two outs then gave up a hit. The throw home was bobbled, allowing the winning run to score. Cullers took the loss, allowing four runs (all unearned) on five hits, while striking out six and did not walk a batter.
TWC took control of game two with five runs in the first two innings, added two more in the fifth and put the game away with a five-run sixth. Jake Stone led the offense with three home runs, driving in six runs and scoring three. Brackton Smith went 3-for-4 with a home run, RBI, two runs scored; Stephen Branca had two hits, RBI, two runs scored; Dale Ricketts a double, RBI and Tanner Quirk a hit, RBI, run scored.
Jeremy Fitzgerald picked up the win, allowing two runs on nine hits, while striking out 10 and walking two. Corey Collins went one inning, giving up one hit and walking one. Drew Masingale closed out the game, striking out one.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs went up 3-0 after four innings, 5-1 in the sixth and pulled away with 11 runs in their final two at-bats. Taylor Oldham slammed three home runs, driving in six runs and scoring three. Ricketts had two home runs with five RBIs and two runs scored.
Stone homered among two hits with an RBI, three runs scored; Jordan Guida had a home run, two RBIs, run scored; Levi had a home run, RBI, two runs scored; Brad Carpenter two hits, RBI, two runs scored; Branca two hits, run scored and Miles Allen a double, run scored. Corey Rhoney went eight innings, surrendering one run on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Masingale tossed the last inning, striking out one.
The Bulldogs face Young Harris tomorrow at 3:00 pm at home, then travel to Young Harris on Wednesday for a 4:00 pm game. Tennessee Wesleyan hosts Reinhardt University for the final weekend of regular season play on Thursday and Friday.
