Saturday evening was the opening day of the NPSL season and it pitted local rivals Chattanooga FC and Knoxville Force. The game was in Chattanooga at their fortress Finley Stadium in front of almost 5,000 fans.
Tennessee Wesleyan College men's soccer team had players on both teams with Luke Winter and John Carrier playing for Chattanooga and Billy Sparks and Martyn Freestone playing for Knoxville. TWC also had representation in the coaching staffs of each team with current TWC head coach Stephen Lyons coaching Knoxville and previous TWC head coach and current University of West Florida coach Bill Elliot coaching Chattanooga.
The game was a good one with Knoxville coming away with a 1-0 win, but TWC and Knoxville head coach Stephen Lyons made the point, "it says a lot about TWC soccer, both coaches have ties to Tennessee Wesleyan and both Chattanooga and Knoxville have current TWC players on their roster".
TWC men's soccer is very proud of these players as they are of all their players who are representing the program by playing in the summer. Sam Clare is playing for the Real Maryland, while Garrett Koon, Matt Cardin, and Logan Heidinger are playing for the Knoxville Force U20's.
