The Bulldogs traveled to Milligan College to face the Buffaloes, who were leading the conference at 5-1, while Tennessee Wesleyan was 4-1.
Tyler Burse scored the first two points of the game, but with just over four minutes played, the Bulldogs quickly found themselves in a 17-4 hole. After the Bulldogs found themselves trailing by 11, they went on an 18-6 run to take the lead, 34-33 with 12 of those points coming from Tyler Burse. Milligan regained the lead but the Bulldogs pulled within one going into intermission, 46-45.
The two teams traded shots until the Bulldogs hit back-to-back 3-pointers to take a 57-54 lead five minutes into the half. A trey from Shannon Smith and another from E'Jay Ward put the Dogs on top, 65-60. The Buffs evened the score for the final time at 73 with 5:27 to play. The Bulldogs kept the Buffaloes off the board for the next three minutes, but they could only extend their lead by three points. Zamarius McClendon then hit two free throws, while Ward and Smith converted one each and Milligan missed a 3-point shot to tie at the buzzer.
The Bulldogs defeated Milligan, 82-79, to move into first in the AAC at 5-1.
Tennessee Wesleyan finished the game 31-of-65 (48%) from the floor and 8-of-21 (38%) from behind the 3-point. Shannon Smith tallied 15 points; while Desmond Crisp had 14. E'Jay Ward put 13 on the board and Tyler Burse had 12. Zamarius McClendon pulled down 8 rebounds and put in six points.
The Bulldogs travel to Montreat on Wednesday to play at 7:30 pm.
