The Bulldogs swept their second conference series this past weekend. They defeated Milligan College, 3-1, 10-6, and 12-4.
In the first game, the Bulldogs scored all three runs in the second inning. Trey Griffin doubled, moved to third on a Brackton Smith single and scored on a wild throw. Travis Burnside singled and another errant throw that sailed into the dugout plated pinch-runner Hunter Hall. Burnside was chased home by a Brandon Walker hit. The Bulldogs had two runners on in the third and loaded the bases in the fifth, but would not score again.
Milligan went quietly against Corey Rhoney the first four innings, but the senior righthander had to work his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth and strand two more Buffaloes' runners in the sixth. Noah Piard allowed the first two runners to reach in the seventh and gave up a run before retiring the side.
In the second game of the double header, starter Brian Bardis was touched for seven hits, but gave up just a single run as the Bulldogs built a 7-1 lead after five innings. Trey Griffin's RBI single in the first frame and Jake Stone's two-run homer in the third made it 3-0. Burnside's double and Stone's three-run homer highlighted a four-run fourth. Brady Frey relieved Bardis to start the sixth, but gave up two home runs as Milligan closed the gap to 7-4. Wesleyan answered with three runs on consecutive doubles by Wes Minton, Stone and Griffin to lead again by six, 10-4. Frey surrendered another home run with one out in the seventh before Justin Sprenger retired the final two batters.
Bardis collected the win, allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out three and walking one.
Wesleyan was out-hit, 12-9. Stone had three hits that produced six RBIs. Griffin had two hits and two runs driven in. Minton added one hit with an RBI and three runs scored.
On Sunday, the Bulldogs amassed its 12 runs in the first four innings. The Bulldogs started the scoring in the first after two were out when Griffin launched a two-run shot over the fence in left. Levi followed with a solo home run for a 3-0 lead. Wesleyan added four more runs in the second. Walker's single, a free pass and Minton's bunt for a hit had the bases loaded before Griffin chased all three runners home with a double. Levi's sacrifice fly would later plate Griffin. Wesleyan added another run in the third and Levi's second round-tripper highlighted a three-run fourth that put TWC on top, 12-2.
Jarrod Jameson picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Tyler Wilson (four strikeouts) and Justin Sprenger (one strikeout) each pitched two inning of one-hit, one-run relief.
For the first time in six AAC game, TWC out-hit its opponent, 12-9. Trey Griffin had three hits, driving in five runs and scoring two. Travis Burnside had three hits with two runs scored and Levi two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored.
The Bulldogs play on Wednesday at 1:00 pm against Ohio Christian for a 9-inning game, and then at 4:00 pm against UVA-Wise for a 7 inning game.
