The Bulldogs traveled to Union College for a weekend of baseball. TWC came away with 2 wins out of the 3 game series. In the first game of the double header on Friday, the Bulldogs won 9-6, but then were defeated 8-3 in the second game. On Saturday the game went 11 innings, before Wesleyan pulled out a 9-7 win.
TWC 9, Union 6
The Bulldogs trailed 6-3 after four innings, but cut the deficit to 6-5 with two runs in the fifth, highlighted by hits from Travis Burnside, Wes Minton and Trey Griffin. In the seventh, Burnside's one-out single started the winning rally. Minton walked and Jake Stone's single plated the tying run. Griffin doubled home a run and pinch-hitter Josh McCray delivered a two-run double to put TWC up, 9-6.
Corey Rhoney went 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Noah Piard picked up the win, retiring the five men he faced with three strikeouts. At the plate, Griffin had two hits, two RBIs, one run scored; Stone two hits, one RBI, one run scored and Burnside two hits, two runs scored.
Union 8, TWC 3
The Bulldogs scored single runs in the second and third to keep the game tied at two, but Union got to starter Brian Bardis for three runs in the fourth and added three more off reliever Justin Sprenger in the sixth to pull away for the five-run victory.
Bardis took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Tyler Wilson gave up two hits without getting an out and Sprenger surrendered three runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
Wesleyan had 10 hits, led by Minton and Griffin with three each, while Brad Carpenter added two.
TWC 9, Union 7
Union knocked Wesleyan starter Jarrod Jameson out in the fourth inning and would lead 6-1 after five innings. Wesleyan began its comeback behind the bat of senior centerfielder Travis Burnside, who had a career-high six hits in the game. In the sixth, Branden Walker singled and Burnside doubled in front of a two-run double by Carpenter. Stone singled another run home and Wesleyan trailed, 6-4. Brackton Smith's double, a sacrifice bunt and McCray's single made it 6-5 in the seventh and Griffin homered in the 8th to tie the game at six. With two outs in the 11th and Smith on base with a walk, McCray walked and Walker reached on an infield single to load the bases. Burnside then cleared the bases with a double to right field, putting the Bulldogs on top, 9-6.
Noah Piard gave up a solo homer in the bottom of the inning before closing out the win.
Burnside went 6-for-7 with three RBIs and a run scored; Stone four hits with an RBI; Walker three hits, three runs scored and Carpenter two hits, two RBIs, one run scored.
Jameson went 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Zach Fleshman gave up one run on one hit with a strikeout and three walks over 3 2/3 innings. Brady Frey gave up two hits and struck out one in 1 2/3 and Piard picked up his second win of the weekend, giving up one run on two hits with a strikeout over 2 1/3 innings.
The Bulldogs will host Lee University on Wednesday at 3:00 pm and then a 3 game series this weekend against Cumberland University. On Friday is a single game at 2:00 pm and then a double header on Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm.
