Bulldogs hosted Point University for a three game AAC weekend series. Tennessee Wesleyan swept the series winnng 12-6, 3-1, and 5-3.
Trey Griffin gave Wesleyan a 2-0 lead in the first when he followed a two-out double by Travis Burnside with a home run. Brackton Smith's double and a sacrifice fly made it 3-1 after two innings and Branden Walker's double, a Burnside single and wild pitch allowed TWC to lead, 4-2, after three innings. Wesleyan added three runs in the fourth after two were out on a hit-batsman, a walk and singles from Jake Stone and Walker. Griffin homered in a two-run fifth, while Griffin, Minton and Carpenter had hits in a three-run sixth.
Rhoney (6-0) went five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. In one inning of relief each, Justin Sprenger gave up one run on one hit, striking out two and walking one and Brady Frey one run on a hit with a strikeout and walk.
Wesleyan had 15 hits, led by Griffin with three and driving in three runs. Stone had two hits, one RBI; Walker two hits, two RBIs; Burnside two hits; Minton two hits, one RBI; Smith two hits, one RBI; and Carpenter two hits, one RBI.
In the second game, Jarrod Jameson (9-0) went six innings, allowing one run on sixth-inning homer and five hits, while striking out eight. Griffin hit his third home run in the second frame to give TWC a 1-0 lead. Josh McCray's leadoff single, sacrifice bunt and Stone's single added a run in the third. In the fourth, Burnside doubled and scored on Minton's double to put TWC in front, 3-0. Jameson gave up a home run in the sixth and Noah Piard came on to pitch the seventh. Noah Piard struck out the first batter before an error brought the tying run to the plate, but the Bulldogs completed a 4-6-3 double play to end the game. Wesleyan had only six hits, two from Minton.
On Sunday, Wesleyan loaded the bases in the first inning with one out on Stone's single, a hit-batsman and intentional walk, but the only run to cross the plate came on a wild pitch. Wesleyan missed a chance at an inning-ending double play in the top of the third and Point would score twice to take a 2-1 lead. In the home half, Burnside singled, stole second and came around to score when the ball was thrown away on a theft attempt at third. Minton and Smith followed with solo home runs to put TWC on top, 4-2. The Bulldogs would not have a hit in the next four innings. TWC starter Zach Fleshman allowed a run in the fifth as Point closed the gap to 4-3.
Tyler Wilson took over in the sixth and went 2 1/3 innings, giving up two hits, striking out five and walking two. Sprenger came on with two Point runners on and one out in the eighth, stranding the runners with a strikeout and fly ball to preserve the one-run advantage. Wesleyan added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning. Griffin was hit by a pitch and scored on Smith's two-out double. Noah Piard picked up his NAIA-leading 12th save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth that included a strikeout.
Fleshman (4-2) earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts. The Bulldogs had six hits. Smith had two hits with two RBIs.
The Bulldogs travel to play at Lee University on Tuesday at 6:00.
