The Bulldogs hosted Virginia Intermont on Saturday hoping for another win to move up in AAC standings, however the Cobras had different ideas. The last second three from Shannon Smith was good but still left the Bulldogs short, leaving them defeated by VI, 72-73.
TWC is 5-3 in the conference and tied with Montreat behind Reinhardt and Union, who are 7-1 in AAC play.
Leading scorer Tyler Burse netted Wesleyan's first nine points, but the score was tied at 15 when Burse and top team rebounder Devante Jenkins went to the bench with two fouls and they were soon joined there by Smith, the club leader in steals. Hosey drained two 3-pointers and two free throws from Preston Russell in the final 90 seconds allowing the Bulldogs to hold a slim, 32-30, at the intermission.
The starters returned for the second half, but little changed with the game knotted at 48 with 12:21 to play. Smith had a bucket; Hosey a 3-pointer and Jenkins and Jeremy Davison each hit one of two free throws to put TWC on top, 55-48. The Cobras went on a 13-2 run to go in front, 61-57, at the 7:41 mark and would lead by seven, 66-59. Wesleyan sliced the gap to two, 68-66, on a 3-pointer from Burse, but then missed a shot and had a turnover. VI scored at the other end and TWC never recovered.
The Bulldogs play at home on Wednesday, January 15th against Point University. Tipoff is at 7:30 pm.
