In a game that proved to be important in AAC standings and exciting for fans, the Bulldogs pulled out a 100-98 win over Reinhardt University on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs entered the game at 7-3 in the conference behind Reinhardt who was 8-2. With the win, the Bulldogs are now 8-3 in the conference and tied with Reinhardt behind Union who is 10-1.
The Bulldogs suffered some foul troubles causing starters, Tyler Burse and Derek Hosey to sit out some of the first half, but the teams still traded first-half points. The Bulldogs got the final shot and Andrew Scofield sunk a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give TWC the lead, 49-42.
With starters returning, Tennessee Wesleyan began to open a wider gap before Reinhardt started creeping back, finally overtaking the Bulldogs to lead, 92-90. Andrew Scofield and Shannon Smith drained 3-pointers, but it took a driving layup by Smith with 2.4 seconds to play to even the score at 98. Rushing to get the ball inbounds, the Eagles stepped on the inline - giving the ball back to the Bulldogs under its own basket. Following a timeout, TWC used Burse as decoy and instead bounced the pass to Devante Jenkins. Jenkins managed to get his off-balance shot to fall in the net for the win.
Burse had 31 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Scofield, five of nine on 3-point attempts, tallied 21 points; Jenkins 15 points, 12 rebounds and Smith 14 points, nine assists.
Wesleyan hit 22 of 28 free throws, but were out-rebounded, 48-36.
The Bulldogs play next on Saturday at 4:00 pm at Milligan College.
