KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Eric Kartman of Taylor (Ind.) has been named the NAIA Baseball National Pitcher of the Week and Shell McCain of Tennessee Wesleyan has been selected as the National Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Kartman and McCain were chosen based on their performances from March 31 – April 6 and were selected out of a pool of conference, independent and unaffiliated group winners.
Kartman, a native of Fort Wayne, Ind., struck out 14 of the 23 batters he faced in Taylor's 7-0 win against Crossroads League rival Goshen (Ind.) on April 1. The senior starting pitcher, who took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, allowed two base runners in the contest – one hit and one walk – with no runners advancing past second base.
On the year, Kartman owns a 4-3 record and 3.57 earned run average in 45.1 innings.
McCain, a junior from Fort Mill, S.C., hit .714 (10-for-14) in five games last week, including three doubles and three home runs. The center fielder's highlight performance came in a 3-for-4 effort against NCCAA Hiwassee (Tenn.) on April 2. All three of McCain's hits were for extra bases, including two home runs. He also tallied three RBIs and three runs scored in the game. For the week, McCain drove in 10 runs and scored 10 times. He also tallied five stolen bases and four walks.
On the season, McCain ranks 15th in the NAIA in batting average (.433) and 16th in stolen bases (23).
