The Lady Bulldogs competed in a tough match Saturday night, earning a 1-1- tie against NAIA #17 ranked Brenau University for their season opener. The game was high paced and both teams had chances in the first half, however, Brenau were able to capitalize off a TWC turnover in their defensive third and cracked a shot that sailed over freshman goalkeeper Taylor Young's head after 18 min of play. TWC came straight back at Brenau and within ten minutes a breakaway opportunity by TWC senior Maddie Thomas looked certain to be a goal - Thomas's last touch beat the oncoming BU keeper who was committed to making a save, but instead took out Thomas on the edge of the penalty area. The BU goal keeper was issued a straight red for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity, and BU was down to 10 players for the remainder of the game. What they lacked in numbers, they made up for in effort, with both sides playing a relentless, and hard-fought, physical game. In the second half, possession seemed in favor of the Lady Bulldogs, however, they could not seem to find the back of the net until 2 min from full time. A nice shot from junior Kaitlyn Poulakis was hit and beat the BU keeper at the 87 min mark. The game moved into overtime but remained tied after 110 minutes of play. A fairly even match with both teams getting opportunities to shoot and get forward, and both teams having to defend well against the other. BU edged TWC on shots with 15-12, and Taylor Young in goal earned 7 saves for TWC. TWC moves into season with a great result against a nationally ranked opponent, and will next face another nationally ranked team, NAIA #8 Cumberland University on Wednesday August 27th at CU with a kick off planned for 4pm CST.
