The Bulldogs hosted the Hiwassee Tigers on Tuesday night for their season opener and came away with the win, 90-62.
Neither team found the bottom of the net consistently in the first four minutes with the game knotted at six. Devante Jenkins snapped the deadlock with a layup and started a 21-0 unanswered streak by the Bulldogs. Stephen Kite had a trey among five points; Justin Simmons four points; Leland Robinson and D'Monta Smith 3-pointers; Wes Richey a bucket and Preston Russell a short jumper as Wesleyan went ahead, 27-6. The teams then traded baskets over the final six minutes of the half with TWC on top, 42-21.
Fueled by a half-dozen Hiwassee turnovers, Tennessee Wesleyan erupted for 15 points in the initial four minutes of the second half, a burst that included back-to-back alley-oop dunks, one by Simmons with an assist from Richey, and the second by Dante Turnipseed on a pass from Kite.
Up by 32, 57-25, The Bulldogs cruised from there to finish with their first win.
Coach Poe used 14 players with 13 scoring, paced by Jenkins and Kite with 15 points each and Richey with 11. Jeremy Davison had eight points with nine rebounds; Jenkins eight rebounds and Turnipseed six assists.
