On Wednesday, the Bulldogs defeated the #1 Cumberland University Bulldogs, 13-7. In the NAIA Coaches Top 25 Preseason poll, TWC was ranked 23rd, while Cumberland earned the top spot after winning the 2014 NAIA National Championships.
Cody Albright started for the Bulldogs and surrendered a first-inning run on two hits and a walk. Designated hitter Tim Kiene evened the score with a leadoff home run in the second frame. Kiene produced two more runs in the fourth when he laced a single to right, following Ridge Hoopi-Haslam's hit and Jordan Garrett's double that put runners at second and third. Albright struggled in the fifth, giving up four hits and walking one that led to five runs and a 6-3 Cumberland advantage. The Bulldogs responded with four runs on two hits, a run-scoring single from Shell McCain and two-run hit by Kiene. Three Cumberland errors figured in the rally. Wesleyan added a single run in the sixth on Tyler Albert's single, a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Phillips and Brad Carpenter's sacrifice fly. Hoopi-Haslam's leadoff triple and Garrett's sacrifice fly upped TWC's advantage to 9-6 after seven innings. Three Wesleyan errors in the 8th led to a run and had the tying runs on base, but catcher Tyler Albert's snap throw picked the runner off second to end the threat. Wesleyan sealed the victory in the bottom of the inning. Albert and Ryan were hit by a pitches and Carpenter had a bunt hit to load the bases. McCain's sacrifice fly plated a run before Hoopi-Haslam cracked a three-run homer to left. Reliever Brandon Landrie capped the win by striking out the side in the 9th.
Albright got the win, allowing six runs on seven hits, striking out six and walking two over six innings. Logan Longwith tossed one scoreless inning and Dillon Dove allowed one unearned run with a strikeout before Landrie finished the game.
Tim Kiene had three hits with five RBIs and Hoopi-Haslam three hits with four RBIs.
Bulldogs host Indiana Tech this weekend for a four game series, starting with a 12:00 pm double header on Saturday and a 1:00 pm double header on Sunday.
