The No. 6 seed Lady Bulldogs began tournament play on Monday in Kingsport against UVA-Wise and lost 1-0. In their second game of the tournament the Lady Bulldogs bounced back and won 4-1 over Montreat. The Lady Bulldogs play today at 1:00 against Virginia Intermont and are slated to play again (if they win) at 5:00 today against the winner of the King and Union matchup which is at 11:00.
The Lady Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the first to lead Montreat 2-0. The leadoff batter for TWC, Ashton Burrell singled to third base and then stole second. Elisha Collins, batting in the No. 2 spot doubled to centerfield to score Burrell. Megan Arndts singled to third base on a bunt but was out at second but Collins scored. Rachele Moretto singled up the middle but was thrown out by the Montreat catcher to the shortstop stealing.
The Lady Bulldogs held Montreat scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when they scored one run on three hits. The Lady Bulldogs came back in the bottom of the sixth and added two more runs to their lead. Collins drew a walk and Arndts doubled down the left field line advancing Collins to third. Heather Gibson flied out to centerfield and Collins scored on the sacrifice fly. Moretto reached on a fielding error by the Montreat shortstop and Arndts scored.
Brittany Fox was the winning pitcher for the Lady Bulldogs. Fox pitched seven innings, allowed eight hits, one run while striking out four.
The Lady Bulldogs had six hits: Burrell was 1-for-3, Collins was 1-for-2, Arndts was 2-for-3, Moretto was 1-for-3 and Myranda Hughes was 1-for-2.
