The Bulldogs hosted #1 Faulkner University on Wednesday for a nine inning mid week game which proved to be eventful. Both teams scored in the first inning off a homerun. For Faulkner, the third baseman, Dennis Morton, hit one over the right field fence, then centerfielder, Shell McCain hit one over the left field fence in the bottom of the inning.
Chris Washington started for Tennessee Wesleyan and allowed seven hits over six innings that included four home runs to help put the Faulkner Eagles on top, 6-1. Tennessee Wesleyan's only run had come in the first inning on a Shell McCain home run.
The Bulldogs got back in the game with a four-run seventh. Singles from Cody Hiefnar, Brad Carpenter, Ridge Hoopi-Haslam and Jordan Garrett, along with a walk, allowed TWC to climb within a run at 6-5. Brandon Landrie replaced Washington and allowed a home run in the eighth, but also struck out five and did not walk a batter in two innings of work. Logan Longwith pitched a 1-2-3 ninth frame and would pick up the win.
The Bulldogs came to bat in the 9th trailing, 7-5, with the first two batters retired on groundouts. Hoopi-Haslam ignited the winning uprising with a home run. Garrett singled and Tyler Albert was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second. With the runners off on contact, Chase Edwards doubled to the gap in left center. Ryan Phillips, pinch-running for Garrett, and Tyler Fowler, on to run in place of Albert, circled the bases. Garrett scored easily and Fowler slid home to elude the tag for the winning run and set off a wild celebration by the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs had 16 hits on the day and left nine men on base.
Ridge Hoopi-Haslam collected three hits with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jordan Garrett had three hits, RBI; McCain two hits, RBI, two runs scored; Carpenter two hits, run scored; Edwards three hits, two RBIs; Hiefnar two hits and Albert a hit, RBI.
Faulkner (35-8) had 10 hits.
The difference was in the bullpen. Three Faulkner relievers allowed nine hits, seven runs, walked one and did not record a strikeout.
Landrie and Longwith for Tennessee Wesleyan combined to surrender just one run while giving up three hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter.
If the weather doesn't interfere with the weekend, the Bulldogs will host Milligan College on Friday for a nine inning game at 2:00 pm, then a double header on Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm. Tennessee Wesleyan will then host Montreat on Sunday at 2:00 pm to make up the final game in the 3-game series with the Cavaliers.
