The Bulldogs hosted Milligan for a three game AAC Series this weekend but also had a game against Montreat to make up on Sunday. The Bulldogs came away from the weekend, 3-1, losing one game of the doubleheader to Milligan in extra innings. TWC is still atop the AAC at 17-4 with Union right behind with 5 losses.
The Bulldogs won the first game on Saturday, 4-3. Wardy Polanco homered in the first inning and Tim Kiene followed a Jordan Garrett single with a two-run shot in the second. Chase Edwards walked, moved to third on an error and scored on Shell McCain's single to put TWC on top, 4-0. Tennessee Wesleyan starter Jarrod Jameson was touched for a three-run homer in the Milligan third. The Bulldogs had runners in scoring position with less than two outs in the third through the sixth frames, but could not score. Jameson, however, dominated until getting two outs in the seventh when a single and ground-rule double put runners at second and third. Logan Longwith came on to throw one pitch, getting a flyball to center that preserved the win.
Jameson went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk. At the plate, McCain had two hits, one RBI; Polanco one hit, RBI, run scored and Kiene one hit, two RBIs, run scored.
Taylor Saucedo pitched five strong scoreless innings in the second game, giving up one hit with seven strikeouts, two walks and one hit-batsman. The game's only run to that point came in the TWC second on a walk, Edwards' single and Andrew Shinnick's two-out hit. Tyler Fowler, Brandon Hartman and Brandon Landrie combined to toss a scoreless sixth, although Landrie surrendered back-to-back singles. Landrie started the seventh, but two walks brought Longwith back to the mound with one out. An opposite-field bloop single just over third base plated the tying run before Longwith induced a double play, sending the game to extra innings. Milligan got a game-winning home run in the top of the ninth and the Bulldogs went quietly in the bottom of the inning, 2-1.
Longwith took the loss, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out one and walking one over 2 2/3 innings.
TWC had just seven hits, two each from Polanco and Edwards.
On Sunday, the Bulldogs defeated the Buffaloes, 12-2. Cody Albright scattered six hits, surrendering one run with eight strikeouts and two walks. Landrie allowed a run on one hit in the eighth. Tennessee Wesleyan scored in seven of the eight innings before the 10-run rule took effect. TWC scored single runs in the first, second, fourth and six frames, two runs each in the third and eighth and four runs in the seventh. The Bulldogs had 15 hits on the day, led by Brad Carpenter and Ridge Hoopi-Haslam with four each. Carpenter collected an RBI and scored two runs, while Hoopi-Haslam had three RBIs and a run scored. Cody Hiefnar had a three-run homer; Hoopi-Haslam a homer; Tyler Albert a roundtripper; Garrett two hits and Cody Stroud a hit, three runs scored.
The Bulldogs then played Montreat and won 17-3. TWC wasted no time putting Montreat away, chasing five runs home in the first, sending 15 men to the plate in an 11-run second and having 17 hits in the game. The game was called after seven innings under the 10-run rule.
Hoopi-Haslam had a double and triple among three hits with four RBIs and three runs scored. Garrett also had three hits with four RBIs and two runs scored. McCain added two hits with a home run, RBI, three runs scored; Carpenter two hits, two RBIs, three runs scored and Polanco two hits, two RBIs, three runs scored.
Dillon Dove picked up the win with four scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out two. Tyler Fowler allowed the three Montreat runs on two walks and home run in the fifth. Brandon Hartman and Taylor Patterson each pitched one scoreless inning with Patterson recording two strikeouts.
The Bulldogs will travel to Lindsey Wilson on Tuesday and then to Truett McConnell this weekend.
