The Bulldogs traveled to Montgomery, Alabama on Monday to face off against #1 Faulkner University. The #9 Bulldogs beat Faulkner on April 8th in Athens by a score of 8 to 7 with some ninth inning heroics, and today's rematch would not end any differently as the game came down to the last frame again.
The Dogs led early in the contest by a score of 3 - 0, before Faulkner scratched a run across the plate in the fourth. Ridge Hoopi-Haslam got the lead back to three with a solo shot in the top of the fifth, but Faulkner would storm back in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a two run homer, to tie the game at 4. Each team traded base runners over the next three scoreless innings to set up another dramatic finish between the two NAIA top 10 squads.
In the top of the 9th, Shell McCain reached on a throwing error to put the game winning run on for the Dogs. After Brad Carpenter laid a bunt down to get McCain to second, Wardy Polanco hit a ground ball to the Faulkner third baseman, but a throwing error to first base gave the Dogs the break they needed as McCain scored on the play to give the Dogs a 5 to 4 advantage. Logan Longwith closed out the game with a scoreless ninth for his 7th save of the season to lock up the win. Taylor Saucedo, the fifth pitcher of the day for TWC, earned the victory.
Next up for the AAC leading Bulldogs will be a trip to Union College to face the second place team in the conference for a three game series on April 25 and 26.
