Men's Soccer - Wed, May. 20, 2009

The first annual TWC 6-A-Side soccer tournament named after Justin Lucas was held on March 28, 2009. Justin graduated from TWC in 2003 after a star studded career in which he achieved such accolades as all conference player of the year, AAC tournament MVP, All American, and was captain leading the team to the AAC and Region XII tournament championships and first National Tournament appearance in over 20 years. After graduating from TWC Justin went on to play professionally in the USA and New Zealand. Justin was not only a great soccer player he was an amazing person and  a great friend to everyone who knew him. Sadly Justin passed away just over a year ago and in remembrance of him we decided to name the annual 6-a-side soccer tournament after our friend Justin.

Despite poor weather in the morning and even more scheduled for the rest of the day the tournament went ahead and was a huge success. With over 50 of TWC alumni (men & women) attending and playing the event was a celebration of both TWC Soccer and a love that everyone had for Justin.

With a high number of College teams attending, the competition to win the tournament was tough, especially for our alumni teams who even though they had been preparing for a few weeks, fitness towards the later stages of the tournament became a factor!

The eventual winners on the men's side were a very strong Maryville College team coached by two TWC Alumni Pepe Fernandez and John Baker who beat a TWC Alumni team in the final. The ladies winners were our own TWC Dozers who were impressive throughout the whole day.

The highlight for everyone was an unbelievable bicycle kick goal scored in the final by 1989 TWC Alumni Kevin O'Shields.

During an interval in the mornings games saw the unveiling of a bench overlooking the TWC Soccer field dedicated to Justin. In an emotional unveiling ceremony kind words were spoken by TWC Vice President of Enrollment Services, Mr. Stan Harrison, Athletic Director Donny Mayfield, Head Men's soccer Coach Stephen Lyons and Justin's uncle Steven Lucas. It was a great honor to have members of the Lucas family travel from New Hampshire and Florida for the Tournament.

The whole day was a massive success and everyone here at TWC are hugely thankful to all the teams that attended, the alumni, and all the friends of TWC Soccer and hopefully next years "Forza" tournament will be even better!
