Athens, TN- On the same day the Bulldogs moved up one spot to number 8 in the NAIA Coaches Top 25 Poll, Tennessee Wesleyan hosted number 1 Georgia Gwinnett for a single 9 inning game.
The Grizzles of Georgia Gwinnett struck first scoring two in the top of the second off a wild pitch and a misplayed grounder. Tennessee Wesleyan came out in the bottom of the 4th to take the lead scoring 5 runs. Wardy Polanco started the inning with a homerun over the left field fence. Paolo Montezuma walked and Omar Gomez was hit by a pitch before Cody Stroud singled to score Montezuma. Alfred Cruz doubled to deep right center to score another run. A passed ball scored the final run of the inning for the Bulldogs.
Tennessee Wesleyan extended the lead to 12-2 in the bottom of the 5th. A triple by Polanco, a walk, a single by Montezuma, double by Stroud, single by Ryan Phillips and Luis Estevez, and a double by Pedro Barrios scored the seven runs for the Bulldogs.
Georgia Gwinnett answered in the top of the 6th with five runs of their own to cut the Bulldogs lead to 12-7. Each team scored one more but went quietly in the final two innings. Tennessee Wesleyan won 13-8.
The Bulldogs increase to 26-9 overall while Georgia Gwinnett falls to 38-2 with their only other loss coming from Madonna.
Tennessee Wesleyan returns to Appalachian Athletic conference action this weekend hosting Bluefield College for a three game series beginning on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
