KINGSPORT, Tenn. - With a fast start and solid pitching, Tennessee Wesleyan captured the 2016 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Baseball Tournament championship with a 3-1 win over Point on Thursday.
The tournament was held at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn.
This was the 10th year in a row the tournament was held in Kingsport, and Tennessee Wesleyan has won nine of the crowns. Bryan captured the 2014 title for the lone exception. Coincidentally, Point's only other title game appearance came in 2014.
To get to the title game, the Bulldogs won 15-5 over Bluefield, took a 1-0 loss to Union, then won 10-3 over Bluefield, and defeated Union twice 16-7 and 11-2.
Tennessee Wesleyan wasted little time in grabbing the lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Wardy Polanco and Paola Montezuma had back-to-back run-scoring hits to make it 2-0. After an infield single, Cody Stroud lined a RBI double to up the margin to 3-0.
It stayed a three-run game until the top of the sixth when Anthony Padron single in Riliani Familia to cut the margin to 3-1. Point had the opportunity to add more runs, but reliever Chevis Hoover fanned Juan Reyes with the bases loaded to end the rally.
Pitching and defense took over from there. Each team was able to get runners on the rest of the way, but double plays and gunning down would-be base stealers were the norm.
In the ninth, Point got a one-out single from Reyes. However, reliever Chris Washington got the final two batters to pop out to third and fly out to center to seal the 3-1 Tennessee Wesleyan victory.
Hoover earned Tournament MVP honors with three doubles and six RBIs for the tournament to go with 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball in the title game.
Both Point and Tennessee Wesleyan receive automatic berths to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. The pairings will be announced Friday at 4 p.m. ET.
