Top-seeded Bulldogs had 12 hits and scored 10 runs during the first three innings en route to an impressive 15-4 win over No. 5 seed Rio Grande in the Kingsport Bracket of the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round on Tuesday.
Daryin Lewis got Rio Grande (38-24 overall) on the board first with a solo home run in the bottom of the first, but Tennessee Wesleyan's Omar Gomez evened the ledger with a leadoff dinger in the top of the second as part of a three-run rally.
In the bottom of the second, Carlos Flores belted another solo shot for the RedStorm to make it a 3-2 contest. However, the Bulldogs (46-12 overall) struck for seven runs in the top of third to open up a 10-2 advantage. Sully Reyes lined a two-run single to open the outburst, and Paolo Montezuma capped inning with a three-run blast to left.
Tennessee Wesleyan tacked on a run in the fourth and four more in the seventh to open up a 15-2 cushion. Rio Grande scored a run in each the eighth and ninth to make the final 15-4.
Lewis finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Luis Jimenez went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the RedStorm.
