#1 in the NAIA Top 25 Preseason Poll, Marian University, traveled to Athens, TN on Saturday to face the Lady Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan University. Although, the Knights of Marian came out to a quick 8-2 lead, the Lady Bulldogs hung in to upset Marian 92-89.
Marian pulled out to an early lead but TWU came back to pull within one at 10-9 and then took the lead for the first time in the game at 14-12 off a trey by Madison Walkup. The teams traded baskets the remainder of the quarter with Marian finishing on top at 25-22.
Tennessee Wesleyan came out in the second quarter to score the first three points and tie it up at 25. It was tied up again at 33 and then at 41 when the half ended.
Gina Dick came out to score the first five points of the half with three free throws and a jumper. The Lady Bulldogs got their largest lead of the game at 11, 60-51 after a trey by Savannah Atkins and Madison Walkup then a three and two field goals by Summer Morris. Marian worked to get back in it with Ana Kirby hitting two three's and then ending the quarter with a field goal and two free throws. The Lady Bulldogs led 63-60 to go into the fourth quarter.
Marian hit a three to start the quarter and tie it up at 63. Kenzie Conn scored the next five points to give the Lady Bulldogs a 68-63 lead. The game became a close one with teams trading baskets and tying it up at 71, 74, 78, and 83. With a minute remaining, Marian began to foul the Lady Bulldogs to put them at the line and save time on the clock. The Lady Bulldogs stayed cool hitting 9 of 10 free throws with 6 of those coming from Gina Dick. Marian hit a field goal, then found themselves at the line as well in the final minute. With a foul called on Lindsey Macon on a three point shot by Kellie Kirkhoff, the Knights had a chance to tie it up at 90, but an offensive violation on the third shot left them still trailing by one, 90-89. Tennessee Wesleyan's final two free throws were hit with only four seconds remaining which only gave Marian enough time to get a shot off just over the half line. The Lady Bulldogs won 92-89.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Gina Dick who had 22 points and 4 assists. Hunter Simpson had 16 points, 5 assists, and 7 rebounds. Madison Walkup led the team in rebounds with 12 and she had 12 points. Also scoring for TWU was Savannah Atkins (11), Lindsey Macon (9), Summer Morris (10), Kenzie Conn (9), and Kelsey Young (3).
Ana Kirby led for Marian with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Almeida and Kellie Kirkhoff each had 17 points. Also scoring in double figures was Jenna Sullivan with 16 and Karen Jones with 11.
Tennessee Wesleyan travels to Tennessee Tech on Monday, November 14th for an exhibition game and then to Milligan College on Wednesday, the 16th for their first Appalachian Athletic Conference game at 5:30 pm.
