A battle of the top 5 took place yesterday in Georgia but the Bulldogs found themselves defeated by the Grizzlies of Georgia Gwinnett after nine innings, 8-5.
It was the third before anyone was able to get on the board. For the Bulldogs, Malik Stephens started the inning with a single to left, followed by a single by Pedro Barrios. Edwin Bonilla bunted to get on, but a wild throw by the Grizzlies advanced him to 2nd and allowed Stephens to score. Next up was Collin Ridout who hit a 3 run homer over the right field fence, giving the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead. This is Ridout's fourth homerun of the season.
Heading to the bottom of the third the Grizzlies used a RBI-single by catcher Ryan Lark, a wild throw by the Bulldogs, a two-run triple by second baseman Marcus McCorkle, and infield grounder by first baseman Brady Hamilton to tie the game at 4-4.
The Grizzlies took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the fourth on a chopper hit by shortstop Angel Soto to put GGC ahead 5-4.
Tennessee Wesleyan tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly to center by Pedro Barrios. Alfred Cruz hit a double to start the inning and Kyle Tunnell came in to run for him before Barrios got his RBI. Malik Stephens reached on a fielder's choice and Bonilla was hit by a pitch but the Bulldogs were able to score any more runs in the inning. Georgia Gwinnett responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs to take an 8-5 lead.
Dailey Carnes was credited with the loss after giving up the three runs in the bottom of the 7th. Also pitching for the Bulldogs was starter Aaron Ford, as well as Ty Fowler, Austin Schiber, Chris Painter, and Ryan Phillips.
The Bulldogs return home for a busy weekend of baseball. On Friday they host Campbellsville at 2:00 pm, then on Saturday they will play Shawnee State in a double header beginning at 12:00 pm, concluding on Sunday with another single game against Campbellsville at 1:00 pm.
