The "Justin Lucas FORZA 14" alumni tournament is an annual 6-a-side men's & womens soccer tournament that we host. We had the first one back in 2009, it is named after one of our men's soccer alumni, Justin Lucas, who passed away tragically in 2007.
Justin graduated from TWC in 2003, he had a very successful college soccer career here that saw him pick up various honors - 1st Team AAC, AAC Player of the Year, AAC Tournament MVP, and NAIA All American. He also captained and led the 2001 TWC team to both AAC & Region XII Tournament Championships, and into the NAIA National Tournament. After graduating from TWC Justin went on to play professionally in the US and in New Zealand, and always stayed heavily involved in TWC alumni events with the soccer programs.
Not only was he a great soccer player he was an amazing person and great friend to everyone who knew him in and beyond college.
The "FORZA" tournament is meant to be a day of celebration to commemorate Justin's life & the soccer programs at TWU. It brings together different college teams as well as current and former players - coming to enjoy playing, watching and talking about the game & their experiences it brought them as college athletes.
As one alumni put it last week, Diana Lennox (formerly Myers),
"We often get the question, "What is Forza?" Forza is an Italian word meaning strength or force. Others will ask ,"Who is #14". We wear #14 in memory of Justin Lucas, an awarded player, an amazing son, and a true friend. This Saturday we will play the game of soccer that brought us together, & celebrate the life-long friendships that were formed while playing it. We may not be as fast as we used to be, score as many goals, or win as many games, but we have a love for the game and for each other and that is what really matters!"
Teams from TWU, Bryan College, Berry College, & Tusculum College in attendance this year, as well as over 70 men and women soccer alumni, a total of 20 teams participated in the tournament. Berry College won the women's bracket while TWU won the men's bracket.
