The Lady Bulldogs from Tennessee Wesleyan hosted Union KY in Appalachian Athletic Conference action on Saturday, January 9th. Union came out strong leading 9-0 with Carly Blankenship hitting all three shots from the outside. A technical foul was called on Union's coach which put Mindy Hodge at the free throw to pull the Lady Bulldogs within one point of Union. After a missed field goal by Union, Wesleyan was able to gain the lead 13-12. Lady Bulldogs used the momentum gained through this lead to stay within 10 of Union throughout the half. At halftime the Lady bulldogs went into the locker room trailing by 6 with a score of 27-33.
Second half action continued with Union leading most of the half. The Lady bulldogs were able to tie up the game on seven different possessions throughout the half and never trailed more than four points. With 12 seconds left in the game, the Lady Bulldogs were behind by two points, 50-52, when a foul was called on Kara Pile of Union. Katie Blevins scored two at the free throw line to tie the score 52-52. Union took the ball down the court but there was a turnover by Carley Blankenship. Heather Gibson stole the ball and a foul was called on Union.
Heather Gibson missed the first free throw but was able to make the second gaining the lead 53-52. Capri Savage for Union put up the final shot but missed giving TWC the win with the final score 53-52.
Katie Blevins led all the scorers with 15 points. Ragan Elliot and Heather Gibson both contributed 10 points to the Bulldog win. Mindy Hodge pulled down 8 rebounds.
Tennessee Wesleyan College will host Bluefield on Wednesday, January 13 at 5:30 pm.
