Red Bank standout Bailey Lyness, all 5-foot-2 of her, signed a basketball scholarship on Wednesday morning with Tennessee Wesleyan College

"Everybody always told me I was too little to play basketball, that I should concentrate on something else.'' Lyness said Wednesday after a huge crowd of students, faculty, friends and family watched her sign. "But it was always my dream since I was a little girl to play college basketball.

"I used people telling me I was too little as motivation, and today my dream came true. I'm looking forward to working hard and enjoying my time at Tennessee Wesleyan.''

Lyness was Red Bank's leading scorer this past season with an average of 16.9 points per game. She also averaged 4.3 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 3.0 steals.

"She is a coach's dream,'' Red Bank coach Steve Redman said. "She worked hard, did what I asked her and gave 100 percent effort at all times. She had her grades right and keeps her nose clean. What more could a coach ask for?''

Lyness was member of the varsity basketball team for four years and started three. She also played a key role on the Red Bank team that won the 2009 state volleyball championship, and is also a softball starter.

"She's a really good player and an even better person,'' Wesleyan coach Jeff Rice said. "We extremely glad to be getting her at Tennessee Wesleyan. "She will make our team and our campus better. She the type of player you're always looking for.

"We'll be moving her to point guard because I think that's her natural position. She is so quick, she can get other people shots and also get off her own shot.''

Lyness is also Red Bank's Student Body President, president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was a member of the homecoming court. She is ranked ninth in her class with a 3.9 grade-point average, and is a candidate for Miss Red Bank.
