The Lady Bulldogs played their first two games of the 2010-11 soccer season on back to back days earlier this week. The team travelled to East TN State University on Monday for a tough match -up against an in-form and physcially fit ETSU side. The Bulldogs were able to hold ETSU goaless for 34 minutes and looked like the better team for portions of the first half. But after an ETSU corner kick that went directly into the goal, the TWC Bulldogs failed to bounce back. Within another minute confusion on defense forced an error in which Tennessee Wesleyan put in an own goal in attempt to clear a goal line deflection. Another ETSU attack followed resulting in a header goal from a perfectly timed cross. The Bulldogs went into half time with their heads down and losing 3-0. They bounced back the 2nd half to battle it out again and get a few shots on frame but ETSU proved too strong offensively and rounded out their scoring with another goal with 10 minutes left in the game. The Lady Bulldogs played well despite the tough loss and know that playing the NCAA Division One level school will help them in the long run. ETSU led in shots with 21 total while TWC only got away 2 on frame. Chealsey Baxter played 90 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs.
The Lady Bulldogs then played again Tuesday in their first home game of the season against Truett-McConnell College. The game was an immediate physical battle between the two very evenly matched teams. After an intense first half with chances at both ends of the field, Junior Cassie Romeo served a corner kick which Senior Helen Collins met with her head, finding the back of the net. The Lady Bulldogs found momentum and carried it through to the 2nd half retaining the majority of the possession of the ball. After a foul outside the 18 yard box in which Freshman Daelyn Swafford was brought down, Collins stepped up to take the free kick placing it in the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. The Lady Bulldogs defense played a strong and solid game to keep the ball out of their net, while Chealsey Baxter had 4 saves in the 90 minutes.
The women's soccer team has a 2010 season record of 1-1-0 and travels to King College on Saturday for their next game. They next play at home on Friday Sep 10th against Trevecca Nazarene University at 4pm.
