Men's Soccer - Wed, Sep. 8, 2010

The Tennessee Wesleyan College men's soccer team traveled to undefeated Shorter University yesterday for their third road game in a week. After two overtime defeats to Southern Poly and the University of West Florida the TWC boys were itching to get their first win of the season.

The game started brightly for TWC who possessed the ball well and had some joy down the right through Casey Johnston and John Carrier. After the bright start Shorter gained a foothold on the game and began to look more threatening. The action went from end to end in a fairly open game and TWC's freshman goalkeeper Joshua Leader was called into action to make a couple of fantastic saves. Then in the 26th minute TWC won a corner on the Shorter left, John Carrier delivered a fantastic ball onto the edge on the six yard box, Billy Sparks rose above everyone else to power a header past the hapless Shorter into the back of the net.

The TWC goal seemed to spur Shorter to life and they pushed on more and more for the rest of the first half. Their equalizer came in the 42nd minute when Shorter's Pierce Kiembi drove with the ball into TWC's box and was clumsily taken down to win a penalty. The penalty was converted by Shorter's senior German defender Sebastian Stihler. The teams went into the half tied at 1-1.

The second half was a physical one with both teams refusing to back down from one another. With the physical nature of the game both teams had less time on the ball and were resigned to going more direct with the play. Again chances came for both teams and both goalkeepers were forced into action. Then in the 79th minute Shorter's Lewis Kwai made a run from the back, played to John Calderwood who gave it back and Kwai was one on one with Leader in the TWC goal, a composed finish put Shorter up 2-1 with 10 minutes left in the game.

This was not the end of the action, TWC pushed more men forward and with 5 minutes left John Carrier dispossessed a Shorter defender and accelerated to their goal, with only the goalkeeper to beat his shot rebounded off the post back into the keepers arms. Then deep into added time TWC had a corner from the right and Stefan Hatfield jumped highest to power a header just wide. The final whistle blew with the score Shorter 2 TWC 1. It was another tough loss for the TWC team who has their first conference game this Saturday at Virginia Intermont College.

With three tough games under their belt TWC should be well prepared for the hard Appalachian Athletic Conference play that begins in earnest.
