Tennessee Wesleyan College men's soccer improved to 2-0-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference on Wednesday after a hard fought 2-1 win over Reinhardt University.
All week the TWC coaching staff has emphasized setting the tone for the game in the first ten minutes and at the start of the game the team was flying. The first fifteen minutes were all TWC, winning every fifty, fifty ball, every header, connecting with every pass, they were really up for this big conference game. During this time TWC had a number of shots, but nothing that tested the Reinhardt goal keeper. TWC needed a goal that didn't come and slowly Reinhardt came into the game, they began to look threatening especially through their central midfield partnership of senior Philip Overby and freshman John Connolly, they conspired to cause one or two headaches for the TWC back line. The first half ended TWC 0 Reinhardt 0.
Again at the start of the second half TWC came out flying and scored after only two minutes. John Carrier picked the ball up on the Reinhardt left, with excellent close control and dribbling beat four defenders and coolly slid the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper into the far corner of the net. It was an excellent solo effort from the sophomore from Norwich England. TWC continued to push forward, but Reinhardt looked dangerous on the counter attack. TWC had a scare on the 60th minute when a penalty was awarded to Reinhardt for a foul in the box. Luckily for TWC the play was called back because the linesman had already raised his flag when the ball had gone out of play down the TWC left.
Reinhardt eventually pulled level through a penalty, there was a tangle of legs in the TWC box, one of the Reinhardt players went down and the referee pointed to the spot. Reinhardt's Mark Withers stepped up to take the kick, he went to TWC goalkeeper Zack Plaice's left. Plaice got a big hand to the ball, but couldn't prevent it from creeping into the net. Reinhardt looked to have the momentum and continued to create chances, Zack Plaice in the TWC goal pulled off some fantastic saves to keep the game level. Then in the 78th minute TWC's John Carrier won a free kick about twenty five yards from the Reinhardt goal. He took it himself and dispatched the ball into the top corner of the net, the Reinhardt goalkeeper didn't move as the ball flew past him into the goal.
TWC hung on for the next twelve minutes to come away with a 2-1 win. It was an excellent result on the road against a tough conference rival. The win puts TWC into second place in the AAC. TWC doesn't have much time to savor the win as it is back to business on Saturday when they travel to Bluefield, VA to play another conference game against Bluefield College at 3pm.
