Tennessee Wesleyan College men's soccer team played Union College on Wednesday in a repeat of last year's Appalachian Athletic Conference quarter final match. Last year Union beat TWC 4-1 in that game, but this years TWC team is different, they are currently undefeated and joint top of the conference, tied with number thirteen in the nation Bryan College.
TWC had a great start to the game, dominating possession and creating a number of chances. They should have scored two or three goals, but eventually the breakthrough came when Pedro Alba delivered a low cross from the TWC left that found captain Luke Winter challenging the Union goalkeeper, the keeper spilled the ball and Winter was the first to react getting to his feet and sliding the ball into the open goal. It was no more than TWC deserved from their excellent play in the first half.
TWC continued their great play into the second half and they should have scored again when another low cross was played to Billy Sparks who sent the ball over the bar. The second TWC goal came when Josh Simnett took a free kick from just inside the Union half near the left sideline. He whipped in a superb delivery that found Luke Winter who glanced a header past the Union goalkeeper into the corner of the net. TWC had chances to extend the lead but the Union goalkeeper pulled off some great saves to keep them in the game. Then with 10 minutes left Union had their best chance of the game when Chris Elliot had a shot from twenty five yards out that was destined for the top corner of the TWC net until goalkeeper Josh Leader extended and managed to get a hand on the ball to tip it wide. This was the final chance of the game and it ended TWC 2 Union College 0.
TWC shot to top of the conference with that win and improved their conference record to and undefeated 5-0-1.
TWC's next game is at home this Saturday against Berry College.
