In the men's game, the Bulldogs opened with a 15-2 run and were never threatened en route to a 101-67 victory.
The Cavaliers simply had no answer for Wesleyan's 6'9 senior post, Matt Towry, who scored 19 of his game-high 26 points as TWC built a 20-point halftime advantage and also collected 10 rebounds to go with two blocked shots. Towry was seen folding and storing chairs from the bench area following the game.
"Matt is a class act - he has been a real pleasure to coach and be around," said TWC Coach Mike Poe. "Who would have thought he'd be where he is today when he came in here as a red-shirt freshman five years ago. He has worked hard to make himself the player he is and proves once again what a coach told me a long time ago - you never give up on a big man."
Shooting 61 percent from the floor and out-rebounding Montreat 47-28 didn't hurt the Wesleyan cause either.
"We came out of the halftime a little flat-footed thinking the game was over, but other than that, we played well," said Poe. "When we get that kind of effort from all 10 players and shoot the ball the way we did, we're a pretty good basketball team."
Bulldogs 101, Cavaliers 67
Towry had eight points and Matt Harper five, including a 3-pointer, as TWC opened a 15-2 gap in the first six minutes. With 3-pointers by Jesse Booher and Sean Bridges, along with a three-point play from Towry, Wesleyan would lead by as many as 24 at 35-11 before the half ended with TWC up by 20, 49-29.
Montreat started the second half with a 9-4 run, but a bucket from Isaiah Kirk and Towry's second three-point play chilled the rally as the Bulldogs began to pull away. Seven straight points by Justin Hicks and another "3" from Booher among five points widened the margin to 31 points with seven minutes to play. Three-point baskets by Andy Cooper and Clovis Gray put TWC over the century mark and the final 34-point margin was TWC's biggest of the night.
In addition to Towry's 26 points, Harper and Hicks finished with 17 each, Booher 13, Bridges nine and Kirk eight to go with a game-high 11 rebounds. E'Jay Ward had nine assists.
