The Bulldogs kept the game close for most of the first half with E'Jay Ward, Matt Harper and Andy Cooper pacing Wesleyan. Maryville led by only 25-21 with 5:02 left in the first half, but the Scots ended the period with a 16-7 run to take a 41-28 lead into halftime. Once again, free throws were an issue as the Bulldogs made only 5 of 11 free throws in the first half.
Maryville started off strong in the second half and jumped out to a 58-35 lead with 15:39 to play.
The Bulldogs didn't give up, however, as they made a 35-17 run over the next 10 minutes to close to within five points at 75-70 with 4:15 to play. Matt Towry scored 10 points during the run while Harper added several buckets and Ward hit a trey.
That four-point deficit was as close as the Bulldogs got, however, as they couldn't hit enough shots down the stretch. Free throw shooting hurt again as TWC shot only 50 percent in the second half. They were 48 percent from the line for the game, making only 12 of 25 attempts.
Towry led all scorers with 30 points while Harper added 19 and Ward finished with 12.
The Bulldogs have a busy week playing at home on Wednesday at 7:30 against Virginia Intermont, away on Thursday at Reinhardt University at 6:00 pm, and then returning home on Saturday against Milligan College.
