The Bulldogs hosted Indiana Tech this weekend for a 4 game series. They played a 9 inning and 7 inning double header on Saturday and then a 7 inning double header on Sunday. The Bulldogs split with the Warriors of Indiana Tech winning the first and last game (5-1 and 12-9) but were defeated in the other two (3-1 and 6-5).
Bulldogs 5, Warriors 1
David Bergin went the first seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six, walking one and hitting two batters. Wesleyan, however, managed just one hit off Indiana Tech and trailed 1-0 until the sixth when Stephen Branca singled with two outs and Cody Gaskill followed with a home run to left field.
TWC added three insurance runs in the eighth. With one out, Jonny Smith bunted for a hit and Jordan Guida singled. A balk moved both runners up and Branca singled Smith home. Gaskill then doubled home Guida and Branca to put the Bulldogs up 5-1.
Corey Collins tossed two innings of hitless relief, striking out two, walking one and hitting one batter. Gaskill had three of Wesleyan's seven hits with two RBIs and Branca had two hits, also driving in two runs.
Warriors 3, Bulldogs 1
David Frey allowed seven hits and walked four over the first five innings, but surrendered only one run, thanks to five strikeouts and backed by an error-free defense. Wesleyan's bats, however, continued to struggle with just three hits over the first six innings and no serious scoring threats.
Drew Housewright tossed the sixth inning, giving up a two-out double and single, but Smith's throw from centerfield cut down a runner at the plate as catcher Rafael Carlot made the tag for the third out, preserving the 1-0 deficit.
Ronald Phelps came on to pitch the seventh and gave up two runs on two hits with a walk. Wesleyan's only run came in the bottom of the seventh on a single from Anthony Boix and David Lindsay's double.
Warriors 6, Bulldogs 5
Matt Brennan started for Wesleyan and allowed only three hits, but walked five, four of them coming in the second inning when Indiana Tech struck for four runs. Wesleyan got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a Santos double.
Josh McDaniel relieved Brennan in the fourth inning, coming on with runners at second and third with no outs, but struck out the side. McDaniel couldn't rescue himself in the fifth when three straight singles after two were out led to two more runs for the Warriors. Corey Collins got the final out and pitched a scoreless sixth.
Wesleyan cut the deficit to 6-5 in the home half of the inning on a Boix double and Santos single. Guida walked to lead off the seventh and stole second base. Branca lifted a flyball to center and Guida was thrown out on a close play trying to reach third. Berry objected to the call and was ejected from the game. A flyball then ended the game.
Wesleyan was out-hit 7-6 with two hits each from Smith, Boix (three RBIs) and Santos (two RBIs).
Bulldogs 12, Warriors 9
Pitcher Noah Piard went the first five innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts. Wesleyan trailed 5-2 before the bats came to life in the fourth. The Bulldogs erupted for eight runs, highlighted by Gaskill's two-run double and Bergin's two-run home run. Carlot and Guida had singles while Santos and Branca also drove in runs with sacrifice flies.
Branca's two-run double made it 12-6 after five innings. Drew Housewright pitched a scoreless sixth, but was touched for three runs in the seventh and the bases were loaded before Crocker came on to get the final out on a ground ball that hit an Indiana Tech base runner.
Gaskill, Bergin, Carlot and Santos had two hits each. Branca drove in three runs while Gaskill, Bergin and Santos had two RBIs each.
The Bulldogs travel to Nashville on Wednesday to play Trevecca Nazarene University at 2:00 pm.
