The Bulldogs traveled to Union College for the second weekend of conference play. The Bulldogs lost both games in the doubleheader on Saturday, but came back to win the single 9-inning game on Sunday, 22-12.
Union 8, TWC 7 (11 innings)
David Bergin went the first five innings, allowing six runs (only three earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking two. Trailing 7-1, the Bulldogs erupted for six runs in the top of seventh. Anthony Boix, Ryan Santos and Jordan Guida singled to load the bases with one out. Johnny Smith was hit by a pitch, Stephen Branca singled and Cody Gaskill reached on a fielder's choice, all scoring runs. Sam Munson then walked to reload the bases and Rafael Carlot delivered a base-clearing double to tie the score at seven and send the game to extra innings.
The score remained the same until the 11th when two errors and a wild pitch allowed Union to pull out the 8-7 win.
Wil Ickes allowed one run in one inning of work. Noah Piard took the loss, giving up the unearned run on just two hits, striking out four, but walking five over 4 and 1/3 innings.
Union 4, TWC 3
Josh McDaniel went the distance, surrendering four runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking two. Singles by Gaskill and C.J. McElroy, along with an error, allowed Wesleyan to take a 2-0 lead in the second. Union went ahead 3-2 in the fourth on four hits. Singles from Sam Munson, Gaskill and Bergin knotted the score at three in the fifth. A double, ground out and wild pitch gave Union what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
TWC 22, Union 12
Wesleyan built a 10-4 lead, but fell behind when Union rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Bulldogs, however, responded with four runs in the top of the fifth and pulled away. Smith went 5-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs; Bergin was 5-for-6 with three doubles, a home run and four RBIs; Santos had a double, home run, two runs scored and four RBIs and Boix was 4-for-5 with a double, home run, three runs scored and five RBIs. Corey Collins went 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits. Matt Brennan tossed 2/3 of an inning, giving up two unearned runs on one hit. Ben Crocker picked up the win, surrendering only one run on three hits while striking out six and walking one over five innings.
The Bulldogs play away at Georgetown College on Wednesday at 4:00 pm and then host Milligan college for the weekend series on Saturday and Sunday.
