This week has been a busy one for baseball. After playing a weekend series at VI, the Bulldogs returned home to finish up the 3 game series with Milligan on Monday and then played Shorter at home on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will travel to Lee University on Wednesday for a 6:00 pm game before finishing the week at Bryan on Friday and Saturday.
The Bulldogs started the week off with a win over Milligan, 19-9, and increase their conference record to 8-4. With the wind blowing hard and at times straight out of the park, it wasn't hard to believe that there would be 34 total hits, including 7 homeruns.
The Bulldogs took an early 11-3 lead after just 3 innings. Milligan came back in the 4th to score two, but the Bulldogs answered with 2 more in the bottom of the inning. The Bulldogs continued scoring one in the 5th and 4 in the 6th. Milligan attempted to come back with 4 runs in the 7th but it wasn't enough, when the Bulldogs scored the last run in the 7th to end the game on the 10 run rule.
Getting hits for the Bulldogs were Michael Whiteford (3), Ryan Santos (3), Stephen Branca (2), David Bergin (2), Cody Gaskill (1), Sam Munson (2), Anthony Boix (2), David Lindsey (2), and Jordan Guida (3). Anthony Boix had 2 doubles while David Lindsey had one. The homeruns were hit by Bergin and Guida, who each had 2.
Ben Crocker pitched 5 innings, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 2. Drew Housewright came in to close the game and struck out 3, while giving up 4 runs on 5 hits.
On Tuesday, it was a different story for the Bulldogs, who struggled to get hits and put the hits together for runs when necessary. The Bulldogs lost to Shorter 9-8. Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the first when Michael Whiteford walked and later scored on a wild pitch, but the Bulldogs left the bases loaded.
Shorter took a 2-1 lead in the third on two walks, an error and two hits. Wesleyan scored again without the benefit of a hit in the third when David Bergin was hit by a pitch and also scored on a wild pitch. Shorter snapped the 2-2 tie with two runs in the sixth. TWC got one run back in the bottom of the inning. Rafael Carlot doubled and was chased home by Whiteford's single. Another error, walk and hit gave Shorter a 6-3 lead in the seventh. Wesleyan bounced right back with two runs on a Carlot double, closing the deficit to 6-5. A single and two-base error after Shorter loaded the bases in the eighth put the Hawks on top 9-5.
In the Wesleyan ninth, Cody Gaskill singled and Sam Munson walked. An error on an Anthony Boix grouder scored Gaskill. Guida reached safely when the ball got by the catcher on a swinging third strike. Whiteford walked to score Munson. Ryan Santos then singled up the middle, chasing Boix home, but Guida was thrown out a the plate to end the game.
Corey Collins went the first six innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out three and walking two. Will Ickes went 1 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on two hits, striking out two and walking two. Ronnie Phelps allowed one run on one hit, striking out two and walking one in 1 2/3 innings.
The Bulldogs had nine hits. Gaskill had three hits with three RBIS and Carlot three, driving in two runs.
