The bracket for the 2011 Appalachian Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament is set, and play began on Tuesday at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn. Not long after the second game ended on Tuesday, the rains came and stayed, washing out the final two games of the day. Tennessee Wesleyan played on Wednesday morning against Bryan and won 19-3. The Bulldogs won over Reinhardt, Thursday 7-2, to continue in the winners bracket. The Bulldogs defeated Bryan 4-3 in the Friday game.
The Bulldogs went on to win the Championship game against top seeded Union College, 16-2. This marks the fifth year in a row Tennessee Wesleyan won the tournament but the first not as the No. 1 seed.
Tennessee Wesleyan took advantage of three Union errors during the first two innings to build a 5-0 lead. From that point, Tennessee Wesleyan never looked back.
In the fourth, it appeared Union was going to get the shot in the arm it needed when Corey Throckmorton led off with a booming shot to left field. However, Jordan Guida timed his leap perfectly and robbed the Union catcher of a solo home run.
Meanwhile, Tennessee Wesleyan belted three four-baggers with David Bergin, Sam Munson and Anthony Boix each sending one over the fence.
By virtue of winning the tournament, Tennessee Wesleyan receives an automatic berth to the 2011 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round. The NAIA will announce the NAIA Opening Round participants on Sunday.
