[Women's Golf] Two named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes

LINCOLN, Neb. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced Thursday that 131 women's golf student-athletes have been named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Jamestown (N.D.) leads all institutions with five individuals on the list.

In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.

Among those honored was Stephanie Carr and Katelyn Weiner of Tennessee Wesleyan. Carr is a junior from Amherstburg, Ontario Canada. Weiner, from Dunlap, TN, graduated from TWC in May.

The 2012-13 Female Champion of Character Award goes to a student-athlete whose greatest success and attributes are humbly displayed through personal character and exemplify the five core qualities of the Champion of Character initiative.

She is a proven leader on her campus and is held in high regard amongst her faculty and staff. She is a great role model for underclassmen and is an outstanding servant leader.

The many activities she has been involved in:

• Freshman Project Leader

• Member of the Servant Leader Honors Program

• Volunteer for the Athens Public Works

• Volunteer for Keep McMinn Beautiful

• Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity

• Assisted and raised money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital

• Service Captain for Women's Soccer

Her coach wrote that she is motivated to perform at the highest level possible every time she steps on the field. She comes to training early and stays late; she wants extra training between classes; she is motivated, driven and competitive. She has the spirit of competitiveness but is a

fair and ferocious player.

[TWC] Bulldogs win Duard Walker All-Sports Trophy

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - At its spring meeting of the Council of Athletics Administrator's and FARs held in Kingsport, Tenn., the Appalachian Athletic Conference awarded its Duard Walker All-Sports Trophy to Tennessee Wesleyan with a score of 800 points. This represents a back-to-back win of the coveted trophy for the Bulldogs. Milligan finished second with 790 points. Bryan finished third with 430 points, while Union was fourth with 370.

The Appalachian Athletic Conference Duard Walker All-Sports Trophy was established as a way of recognizing member institutions with the most successful all-around sports program for the year. Member colleges compete in fifteen sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis & track and field for men; and, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field and volleyball for women. Points are awarded based on team place finish in the regular season and sport Conference Championship Tournament/Meet.

The trophy was named the Duard Walker Trophy in 2000 in honor of Coach Duard Walker who retired that year after 50 years of service to Milligan College as teacher, coach, and athletics director. Walker was named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Athletics Director of the Year for 2001. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2008. Coach Walker was on hand to present this years' trophy to Donny Mayfield, Athletics Director at Tennessee Wesleyan.

The AAC, an affiliated conference within the NAIA, consists of eleven colleges and universities in Tennessee, Virginia, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina and South Carolina. Member institutions include: Bryan College (Tenn.), Columbia College (S.C.), Milligan College (Tenn.), Montreat College (N.C.), Point University (Ga.), Reinhardt University (Ga.), SCAD Atlanta (Ga.), St. Andrews University (N.C.), Tennessee Wesleyan College, Union College (KY) and Virginia Intermont College.

[Softball] Fugate and Forgey sign with TWC to play softball

Haley Fugate and Faith Forgey commit to Tennessee Wesleyan College to play softball. Both are from Bledsoe County High School. Fugate's primary position is short stop. Haley has been named to the all-district team her sophomore, junior and senior year. Forgey's position is pitcher and when she is not pitching she is in the outfield. Faith has been named to the all-district team both her junior and senior year. During their career at Bledsoe County HS they have a combined 202 hits and 169 RBIs. This included 52 doubles, 17 triples and 53 homeruns. While Forgey was on the mound she recorded a 26-8 record with 184 strike outs. In their senior year Fugate and Forgey helped lead their team to a 7-0 record in district play and 21-7 overall, this includes a district tournament win. Both have been dedicated to the classroom earning college credit and a member of the beta club. Fugate plans on majoring in Exercise Science with the desire to be a Physical Therapist. Forgey plans on majoring in Pre-Physical Therapy. Haley is the proud daughter of Christy and Andrew Fugate. Faith is the proud daughter of Greg Forgey.

[Softball] Jessica Gallihar inks with TWC to play softball

Jessica Gallihar signs with Tennessee Wesleyan College. She is from South Greene High School in Greeneville, TN. She plays many positions including third base and centerfield. Gallihar has been named to the all-district team in 2011, 2012 and 2013. In her senior year she batted .316 with 18 hits and an on base percentage of .409. While playing both 3B and CF she had a .975 fielding percentage. Jessica is the proud daughter of Jeff and Vanessa Gallihar.

[Men's Track] Gabe Pendleton commits to TWC

Gabe Pendleton of Lenoir City High School has signed to further his education at Tennessee Wesleyan College. At TWC, Pendleton will be a member of the Bulldog Track team where he will compete in the high jump.

[Women's Lacrosse] Lauren McHugh signs to play with the Lady Bulldogs

After considering several small colleges in the area, Lauren McHugh chooses Tennessee Wesleyan College to call home. On her 18^th birthday, Lauren signed her National Letter of Intent in front of her parents, coaches, and team mates. Lauren McHugh has accomplished a myriad of individual and team goals throughout her high school career and has been an asset to the Woodmont Lacrosse team since she was in 9^th grade. Lauren also has been playing for the Carolina Revolution Club Team for three years, and has served as their captain for for two years.

Some of her accomplishments include:

-Woodmont team captain in the 2012 and 2013 seasons

-Woodmont's 2^nd highest scorer during the 2012 season

-2012 MVP of the Woodmont team

-2012 All-County First Team.

Woodmont High School's Coach Kaitlynn Wright said, "Lauren plays every game with passion, determination, and intensity. She's an incredible leader that motivates her team, and pushes them to do better every day. We wish her the best of luck next year."

Alex Schafer continues her academic and volleyball career at Tennessee Wesleyan College. She is from Soddy Daisy High School in Soddy Daisy, TN. Her primary position is outside hitter. Schafer has been awarded the leadership and most improved award. She was named captain of her volleyball team in 2012. She has dedicated herself to both the court and the classroom. Schafer has been enrolled in honors courses and earned the economic award. She plans on majoring in Nursing with the desire to be a RN. Alex is the proud daughter of Janeanne LaPoint and Steve Schafer.

Sarah Stoffle continues her education and volleyball career at Tennessee Wesleyan College. Stoffle is from Seymour High School in Seymour, TN. Her primary position is setter. Stoffle has lettered 4 years on the varsity team and earned the IMAC academic award. She is in the top 10% of her class and has been selected on the National Honors Society. She plans on majoring in Nursing with the desire to be a NICU nurse. Sarah is the proud daughter of Bobby and Pam Stoffle.

Saltz has been a three year member of the Heat travel ball team. She plans on majoring in Education with the desire to be a teacher. Danielle is the proud daughter of John and Angie Saltz.

Jackie Loyd continues her education and softball career at Tennessee Wesleyan College. Loyd is from David Crockett High School in Telford, TN. She plays both catcher and third base. Loyd has been named to the Tiny Day/Red Edmond all-tournament team. She plans on majoring in Biology with the desire to be a dentist. Jackie is the proud daughter of Pat and Missy Loyd.

[Men's Track] Hilary Cheruiyot qualifies for NAIA Track Nationals

Hilary Cheruiyot qualified for NAIA Track Nationals in the half-marathon. Cheruiyot ran in the Nashville Marathon on April 27th and had an official time of 1:14.33. He will be racing in the NAIA Nationals on May 25th in Marion, Indiana.

[Baseball] Bulldogs fall in 19 innings

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - No. 3 seed Missouri Baptist needed 19 innings to pull out a 4-3 victory over top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan on Monday to win the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round - Kingsport Bracket.

The 19 innings is a record for longest game in an opening round game. The previous record was 11 innings. With the win, Missouri Baptist (35-12 overall) advances to the AVISITA-NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho. Tennessee Wesleyan ends the season at 45-18 overall.
Tennessee Wesleyan set an opening round record for most at bats by a team in a game with 68. The previous record was 62 by Oklahoma City vs. Jamestown (N.D.) and St. Thomas (Fla.) vs. Union (Ky.) with both achieving the mark on May 19, 2010. Missouri Baptist had 64 at bats.

The game nearly ended in regulation as Tennessee Wesleyan was down to its final out before mounting a two-out, two run rally. Joe Stropp put the Spartans up 3-1 in the seventh with a two-run home run. In the bottom of the ninth, Tennessee Wesleyan had no one on with two outs when Brackton Smith and Josh McCray lined back-to-back singles. An error allowed the first Bulldog run to score, Travis Burnside singled in pinch-runner David Donald to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

Then the madness began. During the next nine innings, both teams had ample opportunities to score the go-ahead and/or the winning run. However, the teams combined to strand 18 runners. Missouri Baptist finally broke the deadlock in the 19th inning when it loaded the bases with one out and Garrett Vail lofted a sac fly to push the go-ahead run across. Tennessee Wesleyan got the tying run on in the bottom of the 19th as Jake Stone lined a one-out single. But the Bulldogs were unable to score, sealing the 4-3 win for the Spartans.

[Volleyball] Abby Schuster commits to TWC to play volleyball

Abby Schuster commits to Tennessee Wesleyan College. Schuster is from Watertown High School in Watertown, WI. Her primary position is outside hitter. Schuster has been named to the all-conference 2^nd team. Schuster has not only dedicated herself to the court but also in the classroom. She has earned academic achievement awards as well as being selected on the National Honors Society. She plans on majoring in Biology/Pre-med with the desire to be an anesthesiologist. Abby is the proud daughter of Jennifer Schuster-Yanke and Joshua Yanke and Chad and Angela Schuster.
